오늘날 현대음악은 실험적이고 새로운 시도를 통해 급격한 발전과 변화를 겪고 있다. 그러한 것들은 오히려 청중들에게는 괴리감을 가져왔고, 관심을 더욱 멀어지게 만들었다. 그러나 현대음악의 장르 중 하나인 미니멀 음악은 최소한의 음악적 재료들을 이용하여 반복하는 형태의 음악으로 대중들에게도 즐거움을 줄 수 있는 음악으로 자리 잡게 되었다.
본 논문에서는 미니멀 음악의 가장 중요한 요소인 반복성의 관점에서 세계적인 작곡가 류이치 사카모토의 음악을 분석해보고, 미니멀 음악의 창시자이자 대표적인 작곡가인 필립 글래스의 음악과 비교 분석을 통해 류이치 사카모토가 반복을 통해 미니멀 음악을 어떠한 방법으로 본인만의 음악 어법으로 표현하였는지 알아보고자 한다. 류이치 사카모토와 필립 글래스의 생애와 음악을 알아보고, 반복의 개념과 종류, 미니멀 음악과 그 안에서 나타나는 반복성에 대해 알아본다. 그리고 두 작곡가의 곡 중에서 미니멀 음악이 잘 표현된 곡들의 분석을 통해 두 작곡가의 미니멀 기법에 대해 비교 분석한다.
분석 결과 두 작곡가는 미니멀 기법의 가장 큰 특징인 반복성과 단순성이 분명하게 드러나고 있음을 알 수 있었고, 그 속에서도 큰 차이점을 가지고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 필립 글래스는 선율이 존재하지 않는 리듬 반복 중심으로 전체적인 음향에 초점을 맞춰 작곡하였고, 류이치사카모토는 리듬의 반복 속에서도 명확한 선율이 드러나도록 선율에 초점을 두고 작곡했다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 필립 글래스는 화성과 조성의 사용에 있어서도 미니멀 기법을 적용했지만, 류이치 사카모토는 더욱 다양한 화성과 조성을 사용했다는 것을 분석을 통해 알 수 있었다.
연구 결과 두 작곡가는 반복이라는 전제가 공통적으로 존재하는 것을 알 수 있었고, 그 속에서 류이치 사카모토는 단순하고 지루할 수 있는 미니멀 음악의 단점을 명확한 선율과 다양한 화성과 조성의 사용, 복잡한 구성 등을 통해 극복하고 본인만의 음악 어법으로 표현해 냈음을 알 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Today’s modern music is experiencing rapid development
and change through experimental and new attempts. However, these, if
anything, brought about separation with the audience, and made them
be less interested in it. But minimal music, which is one of the genres
of modern music, settled itself as music that brought joy to the audience
through repetitive music by using minimum musical ingredients.
This paper seeks to analyze internationally renown composer
Ryuichi Sakamoto’s music from the perspective of repetitiveness, which
is the most important element of minimal music, and examine how he
expressed minimal music with his own musical expression using
repetitiveness, through the comparative analysis with the music of Philip
Glass, the founder and representative composer of minimal music.Life and music of Ryuichi Sakamoto and Philip Glass are
examined, and the concept and type of repetitiveness, and repetitiveness
demonstrated within minimal music are examined. And comparative
analysis on the minimal technique of the two composers are conducted
by analyzing the songs of the two composers that best express minimal
music.
According to the analysis, it was observed that repetitiveness
and simplicity, which are the biggest characteristics of the two
composers’ minimal technique, were clearly demonstrated, and it was
also possible to find out that there was a big difference within it. It was
observed that Philip Glass composed by focusing on the overall sound,
with the repetition of rhythm void of melody as the center, while
Ryuichi Sakamoto composed by focusing on clear melody even within the
repetition of rhythm. Also, through the analysis, it was observed that
even though Philip Glass applied minimal technique in the use of
harmony and tonality, Ryuichi Sakamoto used more diverse harmony and
tonality.
As a result of the study, it was observed that the premise of
repetition commonly existed between the two composers, and within it, it
was observed that Ryuichi Sakamoto overcame the weakness of minimal
music, which can be simple and dull, with the use of precise melody
and diverse harmony and tonality, and complex configuration, and
expressed using his own musical expression.
